The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP backed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has disowned a petition challenging the outcome of the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election, insisting that it neither authorised nor sponsored the legal action, purportedly filed in its name.
The PDP at a Media briefing by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed stressed that the petition does not have the approval or backing of the PDP.
Jugundo asked the lawyer allegedly filed the petition, Ochai Jacob Otokpa, to produce the authority under which he purportedly instituted the case in the name of the party as he explained that only the National Legal Adviser has the constitutional authority to institute or authorise legal proceedings on behalf of the PDP.
The PDP also noted that the party’s purported candidate in the election had, in an interview on national television stated publicly that he neither authorised anyone nor engaged a lawyer to file the petition on his behalf.
The Wike- backed PDP called for investigation into the matter as it threatened sanctions against those behind the action.
It discloses that its legal department is already taking immediate steps to withdraw the petition or purported proceedings before the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo.
It also asked security agencies and other relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the filing of the petition and take appropriate action against Otokpa or anyone else found to have participated in the alleged action.
