As political campaigns begin in Kano, the state government is urging political parties and governorship candidates to play by the rules, campaign on issues and avoid actions capable of threatening law and order.
The call was made by the Director-General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Sanusi Bature, who also urged security agencies to remain professional and politically neutral throughout the campaign period.
Kano is a state where politics commands deep public interest and strong emotions.
With campaign activities now underway ahead of the 2027 governorship election, the Kano State Government is calling for a contest driven by ideas, not violence.
The Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, says Governor Abba Yusuf is committed to a peaceful campaign and expects other political actors to adopt the same approach.
Bature wants governorship candidates across party lines to resist the temptation to mobilise supporters for confrontation.
He says candidates should win voters through their programmes, policies and ability to convince the electorate.
The government is also looking to security agencies to play a critical role in protecting the electoral process.
Bature is asking security personnel to remain professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties throughout the campaign.
Meanwhile, political activities are expected to intensify as Governor Abba Yusuf prepares to unveil his campaign council in the coming days.
The government is also calling for responsible political communication and urging the media to avoid reports and broadcasts capable of inflaming tensions or shrinking civic space.
