The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, IPCR, has called for increased investment in peacebuilding, warning that the cost of conflict far exceeds the resources required to prevent it.
Speaking at a peace and dialogue event in Abuja, the Director-General of the Institute, Joseph Ochogwu, said peace must move beyond rhetoric to deliberate and sustained investment by government, the private sector, communities and individuals.
As Nigeria and other countries grapple with insecurity, displacement and social tensions, the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Joseph Ochogwu, says greater investment is needed to prevent conflicts before they escalate.
He made the call while delivering a lecture titled, “Investing in Peace: A Collective Responsibility for Everyone.”
The call for greater investment in conflict prevention was echoed by the President of Ufuk Dialogue, Emrah Ilgen, who advocated a whole-of-society approach to peacebuilding.
He said sustaining peace cannot be left to government and security agencies alone, stressing the importance of dialogue, tolerance, community participation and responsible citizenship.
The message from the event was that peace is a collective responsibility that requires continuous investment in dialogue, inclusion, social cohesion and conflict prevention.
