The controversy over Nigeria’s five per cent Ticket Sales Charge, TSC, has taken a new turn, with airline operators and aviation unions disagreeing over the payment and remittance of the statutory levy.

The disagreement surfaced at the 30th annual conference of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents, LAAC, in Lagos, where operators cited rising operational costs and legacy debts, while labour representatives insisted that the levy is established by law and remains critical to aviation safety and workers’ welfare.

Airline operators of Nigeria Chairman who is also Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, and Allen Onyema, chairman Air Peace blamed payment difficulties on rising aviation fuel costs.

President of ATSSSAN, John Ogbe insisted that the five per cent TSC is a statutory levy established by law, that airlines are only collection agents and must remit the funds to support aviation safety and workers’ welfare.

LAAC organisers called for dialogue among operators, unions and regulators to resolve the dispute while highlighting the importance of the annual event

The annual LAAC conference provides a vital platform for aviation stakeholders to discuss industry challenges, engage regulators and shape conversations on the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
