With the deepening challenges in the Nation’s Healthcare system ranging from high cost, increased disease burden and shortage of manpower occasioned by persistent brain drain, more health experts are calling on Nigerians to take greater ownership of their physical, mental, emotional and overall well-being through self-care approach.
They were speaking at a conference in Lagos with the theme “Selfcare Eco System Connecting The Pillars Of Health”
Self-care refers to actions individuals take for health and well-being, hinged on five pillars, namely: nutrition, physical activities, mental health, risk avoidance, and rational use of items or things without abuse.
Following the release of the WHO self-care guidelines in 2019, the government of Nigeria adopted and began the implementation of the initiative to bridge the gap of unmet needs in health care.
Beyond the adoption of self-care to prevent non-communicable diseases, speakers at the 3rd edition of D Bio wellness and self-care summit worried about emerging infectious diseases.
The conference brought together policy makers, health-care professionals, researchers, corporate organizations, and wellness advocates.
