The Plateau State Government has ordered the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state from Monday, September 14, 2026, following measures to contain reported cases of suspected diphtheria.
The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said the temporary closure of schools from September 7 was a precautionary measure that allowed health authorities to strengthen surveillance and response to the disease.
Ramnap assured parents, guardians, and school proprietors that appropriate health measures have been put in place to minimise the risk of transmission as schools reopen.
She directed school authorities to maintain clean and hygienic learning environments, remain vigilant for symptoms suggestive of diphtheria, and promptly report suspected cases to health authorities.
Parents and guardians were also urged to observe proper hygiene, including regular handwashing, to avoid unnecessary close contact with persons showing suspicious symptoms, and to seek medical attention promptly when necessary.
The government warned against self-medication and concealing suspected cases, stressing that early detection and appropriate treatment are critical to preventing further spread.
Ramnap called on parents, teachers, students, and school proprietors to comply with health advisories and support a safe resumption of academic activities across the state.
