The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has described the death of its former National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Mahmud Tukur as a profound loss to Nigeria, saying the elder statesman’s decades of service left an enduring mark on the country’s political, economic and democratic development.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the PDP describes Tukur as a distinguished statesman, elder, administrator, businessman and committed member of the party.
The party recalls that Tukur who was Chief Executive/General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, served as Governor of the defunct Gongola State from October to December 1983 before later serving as Minister of Industries.
Beyond government, Tukur also established a presence in the private sector and international business community, including as president of the Africa Business Roundtable and chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, among other positions.
Tukur was elected National Chairman of the PDP in 2012 and led the party until his resignation in January 2014. The PDP says his contribution to the party played significant roles in the affairs and development of the PDP.
His tenure as National Chairman, the party notes, came at a significant period in the political history of both the PDP and Nigeria, bringing to its leadership his wealth of experience, institutional knowledge and longstanding commitment to public service and democratic development.
The Nyesom Wike- led PDP extends its condolences to Tukur’s family, relatives, friends and associates, as well as the people of Adamawa State and the PDP family across the country as it prays to God to accept his soul.
Meanwhile, the PDP Interim National Working Committee-led by Kabiru Turaki has expressed sadness over the death of the party’s former National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, who passed on at the age of 90.
The Party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong recalls that the elder statesman’s final message to the PDP was a call to keep its flag flying and preserve its place as Nigeria’s truly national political platform.
The party says Tukur’s death marks the loss of not just a former national chairman but a statesman whose political and professional career spanned decades and who remained committed to the party’s future until his final months.
The Interim National Working Committee of the PDP says Tukur had, during his last interaction with the party leadership, reaffirmed his faith in the party and charged its National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki to sustain its mission.
The PDP faction added that Tukur’s passing, though painful to his political family, should also be seen against the backdrop of a life spent serving Nigeria in politics, public administration and the economy as it recalls that Tukur played prominent roles in shaping policies and projects in several sectors of Nigeria’s economy, particularly ports administration, international trade and industries. His political career include service as Governor of the defunct Gongola State, as well as several other high-ranking political and public offices.
The Party notes that its former chairman’s death had been received with deep sadness by members of the PDP across Nigeria and in the diaspora as it extends its condolences to Tukur’s family and Nigerians who admired him.
