Cross River State Govt Admits Gaps In Project Monitoring, Payments

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu

Cross River State Government has begun a review of ongoing state projects.

The aim is to bring contractors together to address payment issues, project monitoring and challenges affecting delivery.

The engagement is also changing how the government tracks projects, with the Department of Project and Programmes Monitoring and Evaluation taking a more direct role in payments, implementation and contractor performance.

The engagement was convened to give the government a clearer picture of projects under execution, and the challenges facing the contractors handling them.

Officials of the Department say they have been visiting project sites and are familiar with the problems contractors face.

But gaps in project monitoring have made it difficult to properly track payments, work done and contractor performance.

Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Project and Programmes Monitoring and Evaluation, Okokon Inyang, explains the gaps identified and the new arrangement for monitoring state projects.

Cross River State Internal Revenue Service, CRIRS, is also reminding contractors that their obligations to the state go beyond executing government projects.

With clearer responsibility for monitoring and payments, the state government says it expects ongoing projects to move from funding and paperwork to timely completion.
