A section of a four-storey hotel building under construction in Enugu, has collapsed, leaving at least one person dead.
Four others have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries.
The building came down around 6 a.m. Sunday on Ogbaru Street, Independence Layout, trapping workers who were reportedly sleeping at the site.
The Sunday morning had barely begun when parts of the building came crumbling.
When AIT arrived, rescue and emergency responders were already at the scene, working to secure the area and assist the victims.
Neighbours said six workers normally sleep at the site, but one had stepped out, leaving five inside, when the structure came down.
Uche Anya, who is in charge of the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, says investigation has commenced to determine what caused the collapse.
But for Chibuike Obinna, an eyewitness and security man working in the neighbourhood, the incident raises fresh questions about the quality of materials and the standards used in building constructions.
Building collapse is not a common sight in Enugu, making this tragedy particularly disturbing.
Beyond the shock, the incident has now put the spotlight on building standards, quality of materials, supervision and safety measures in the State’s construction sector.
