The Cross River State Police Command has launched Operation Velvet Marine.
It is a new maritime security operation targeting piracy, sea robbery, smuggling and other crimes on the state’s waterways.
The operation, launched at the Dolphin Base in Calabar, covers the Calabar Channel, Qua River, Great Kwa and adjoining creeks.
The waterways are important routes for fishing, trading and transportation in Cross River State.
But users of these routes have also witnessed security and safety challenges on the water.
The Cross River State Commissioner Of Police, Ajo Geoffrey, said the launch of Operation Velvet Marine is the Police Command’s response to these concerns.

The operation will involve regular patrols across the waterways.
For waterway users, the expectation is that stronger security will make movement and business safer.
The State Marine Officer, CSP Franklin Mbah, said patrol boats and specially trained personnel are already part of the operation.
Operation Velvet Marine is expected to continue through the months Srptember to December and beyond, with the Police Command looking to make Cross River’s waterways safer for the people who depend on them.
