Despite meeting with Unions over concession of King’s college, the Federal government went behind to extend the resumption date of all Federal unity colleges by three weeks.
A circular dated September 8, 2026 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Aisha Garba, suggested that the Ministry envisaged backlash from the Kings college concession deal, but went ahead to announce resumption for Monday, September 14.
The circular seen by AIT Online on Tuesday as shared on the platforms of some Unity schools’ parent whatsapp groups, was addressed to All Directors of Federal Unity colleges, all Principals, all Students, parents and teachers.
According to the circular, the decision by the Federal Ministry of Education, was to provide students additional time to rest and prepare for the new academic session.
It will be recalled that Unity colleges went on holiday since June and the students would now be spending over three months at home, while most schools in Nigeria went on holiday in July and have already resumed in the second week of September.

On Monday, September 14, the Federal government had a meeting with the leadership of unions, where a 7-man Committee was set up and given two weeks to return its report.
Some parents of students of Unity colleges who spoke to AIT Online have expressed concerns on why the circular which was dated September 8th, days before the announced resumption date of 14th, had not been withdrawn even after it had been overtaken by events, including the announcement of the suspension of the unions planned industrial action, by the Education Minister, Tunji Alausa, and by the leadership of the unions.
