The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of the University of Portharcourt (UNIPORT) has embarked on an indefinite internal strike on September 16, 2026, due to the university management’s failure to fully implement agreed salary components.
The chairperson of ASUU Uniport branch prof Omeh Obasi Ngwoke said the strike is necessitated by illegalities going on in the institution.
Nqwoke said they have been engaging with the school administration and been showing understanding to ensure that their outstanding salaries are paid in full in line with the federal government’s directives but could no longer bear the brunt of the lack of of salary payment.
The uniport ASUU chairman also lamented that their members are living in abject poverty, and some have even lost their lives as a result of non payment of salaries.
They promised not to call off the strike until the university of Port Harcourt yield to their demand and stop violating the order and the directives of the federal government.
