The University of Port Harcourt chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the FGN-ASUU Agreement signed in December 2025.
The Chairperson of the ASUU UNIPORT branch, Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the strike was necessitated by illegalities going on in the institution.
Ngwoke said they had been engaging with the school administration and showing understanding to ensure that their outstanding salaries were paid in full, in line with the Federal Government’s directives, but could no longer bear the brunt of the non-payment of salaries.
The UNIPORT ASUU Chairman also lamented that their members were living in abject poverty, and that some had even lost their lives as a result of the non-payment of salaries.
They promised not to call off the strike until the University of Port Harcourt yields to their demand and stops violating the orders and directives of the Federal Government.
