As the world marks the International Day of Peace, groups in Plateau State are calling for greater investment in peace-building and peaceful coexistence.
They made the call during an awareness walk in Jos to draw attention to the need for sustained efforts towards peace.
Globally, September 21 every year is observed as the International Day of Peace.
To mark the day in Plateau State, peace advocates took to the streets of Jos, using the awareness walk to raise consciousness about the importance of supporting peacebuilding efforts.
While some may question the relevance of celebrating peace in a State that has experienced years of conflict and insecurity, the advocates say such experiences make the need for peacebuilding even more important.
With this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” the advocates say investment in peace must go beyond financial resources, stressing the importance of dialogue, tolerance, reconciliation and community engagement.
Peace, they say, is not simply the absence of conflict, but the capacity of individuals and communities to manage differences and resolve disputes constructively.
As the world marks the International Day of Peace, the advocates are urging residents to see peace as a shared responsibility and to make conscious contributions towards peaceful coexistence.
