Mandatory IT certification may now be required for civil servants seeking promotion examinations from 2027.
The Federal Civil Service Commission Chairman, Tunji Olaopa, disclosed this in Abuja while inspecting centres for the 2026 Directorate Level Promotion Examination.
Olaopa said the proposed requirement is intended to ensure civil servants have basic digital skills needed to operate in an increasingly computer-based public service.
The 2026 promotion examination, conducted across seven centres covering the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, recorded about 98 percent participation.
5,792 of the 5,900 scheduled candidates sat for the examination. After inspecting centres in the FCT, Olaopa said the CBT exercise was generally successful despite the intermittent internet connectivity challenges.
According to the chairman, the commission is reviewing the examination process, including the possibility of further decentralising promotion tests to state-level centres.
Olaopa explained that the proposed IT certification would be a pre-qualification for promotion examinations and is aimed at improving digital competence among civil servants.
