United States, U.S President Donald Trump has told world leaders that American power remains essential for global stability.
President Trump stated this in his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly, UNGA in New York.
President Trump used his first UNGA address of his second term to defend his America First foreign policy, while calling for reform of the United Nations, UN.
President Trump said the United Nations has tremendous potential but is not living up to it, noting that the U.S had to lead peacemaking efforts that the UN should have handled.
He told the Assembly that his administration had confronted complex problems head-on, including conflicts neglected by previous administrations.
On security, Trump maintained that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon, referencing the U.S strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, and said Washington is leading efforts to enforce the Biological Weapons Convention.
On the Middle East, he spoke on progress in his 20-point Gaza peace plan, called for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas, and rejected moves by some European nations to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state, describing it as a reward for terrorism.
The U.S President also defended his hardline immigration policy, criticised Europe’s handling of migration and climate policies, which he called a con job, and touted over $17 trillion in investments flowing into the U.S through trade deals.
Immediately after his speech, President Trump signed a trilateral agreement with Denmark and Greenland to expand U.S military presence and cooperation on critical minerals and Arctic security.
He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Japan, Ukraine and Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodriguez, on the sidelines of the Assembly.
The General Debate continues with nearly 130 heads of state and government expected to address the Assembly this week.
