The opposition African Action Congress, AAC, has called on the National Assembly to address what it describes as the constitutional implications of President Bola Tinubu’s prolonged absence from Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said Tinubu left the country on August 30 for a three-week vacation, while the Presidency announced on September 21 that his stay abroad has been extended.
The AAC cited Section 145 of the Nigerian Constitution, arguing that where the required presidential declaration is not transmitted within 21 days, the National Assembly may empower the Vice-President to perform presidential functions as Acting President.
The party called on the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas to clarify whether the required declaration was transmitted and, if not, to initiate the process provided under the Constitution.

The AAC said the matter concerns constitutional accountability and Nigerians’ right to know who is exercising presidential authority.
