Edo State House of Assembly has approved the constitutional amendment seeking to establish State Police Services in Nigeria.
The lawmakers unanimously backed the proposal, which is now before the 36 State Houses of Assembly for concurrence as part of the constitutional amendment process.
The proposal would alter the 1999 Constitution to provide for State Police Services alongside the Nigeria Police Force at the federal level.
It was transmitted by the National Assembly to the 36 State Houses of Assembly on September 16 for consideration and approval.
Leading the debate, Majority Leader Sunday Ojiezele urged members to support the amendment, arguing that State Police could strengthen the response to security challenges.
Other lawmakers also supported the proposal, saying policing at state level could bring security personnel closer to communities.
One of the lawmakers, Richard Edosa, also called for the establishment of an Edo State Police Service Commission as part of the proposed framework.
Following the debate, the House unanimously approved the bill, and Speaker Yekini Idiaye directed the Clerk to forward clean copies of the concurrence resolution to the National Assembly.
In another development, the House screened and confirmed Ogbeide Jolly Obosa as a member of the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission, EDSOGPADEC.
The House adjourned sitting until September 28, 2026.
