Drug hotspots exposing minors to illicit substances and a rehabilitation centre taking in more than one hundred drug-dependent persons are among the challenges emerging from Kano State’s crackdown on drug abuse.
The state Anti-Drug Task Force says several offenders have been convicted, while a former local government chairman is facing prosecution.

These are some of the issues confronting Kano State’s Anti-Drug Task Force two months after its inauguration.
Raids across identified locations have led to the recovery of illicit substances and the rescue of drug-dependent persons, including minors.
Task Force Chairman Muhyi Magaji displayed some of the substances recovered, saying operations are targeting locations used for their sale and distribution.
The crackdown is also producing court outcomes.
Magaji says several offenders have been convicted for drug-related offences, while a former local government chairman is currently facing prosecution.
More than one hundred drug-dependent persons are now undergoing rehabilitation at the state’s reformatory centre.
The task force says the number is putting pressure on the facility’s existing capacity.
With enforcement and rehabilitation running side by side, the task force says operations against drug hotspots will continue, particularly where minors and other young people are being exposed to illicit substances.
