Schools across Zamfara State in North-West Nigeria are expected to resume on Monday, September 28 following an improvement in reported cases of Diphtheria in the state.
The State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology says the decision follows an advisory from the Ministry of Health indicating a decline in diphtheria cases, while urging schools and communities to remain vigilant and maintain preventive measures.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Gajam.
The Commissioner urged teachers and caregivers to monitor pupils, students and staff daily for symptoms associated with diphtheria and promptly report and refer suspected cases to the appropriate health authorities.

He also directed schools to ensure that anyone showing suspicious symptoms does not participate in school activities until medically assessed.
The statement advised schools to maintain proper handwashing, personal and respiratory hygiene, ensure adequate classroom ventilation and reduce overcrowding where possible.
Schools were also urged to cooperate with the planned preventive vaccination campaign and intensify health education and sensitisation for pupils, students, teachers and parents.
Gajam further directed schools to designate a focal person for health-related reporting and maintain communication with relevant health authorities.
Parents and guardians were particularly advised not to send children who are unwell to school, but instead seek appropriate medical attention promptly and report any suspected case to health authorities.
The Zamfara State Government has assured the public that the health and safety of children remain a priority.
