Nigeria’s total public debt stock rose by ₦7.44 trillion between March and June 2026, reaching ₦166.79 trillion, according to the latest figures from the Debt Management Office, DMO.

Nigeria’s total public debt increased from ₦159.35 trillion as of March 31 to ₦166.79 trillion by June 30, 2026. This represents an increase of about 4.67% in three months. The rise was recorded in both domestic and external debt.

Domestic debt increased from ₦87.40 trillion in March to ₦91.59 trillion in June, representing an increase of about ₦4.19 trillion. External debt also rose from ₦71.95 trillion to ₦75.20 trillion, an increase of about ₦3.25 trillion in naira terms.

As of June, domestic obligations accounted for 54.91% of the total debt portfolio, while external debt represented 45.09%.

The Federal Government alone accounted for about ₦87 trillion in domestic debt and ₦65.77 trillion in external debt.

For states and the Federal Capital Territory, domestic debt stood at ₦4.59 trillion, while their external debt was about ₦9.42 trillion.

In dollar terms, total public debt increased from $114.95 billion in March to $120.93 billion in June, an increase of roughly $5.98 billion.

However, the DMO used different official CBN exchange rates for the two reporting dates, meaning movements in the naira value of external debt also reflect exchange-rate changes.
