The Niger Basin Authority And the Lake Chad Basin Commission established by Nigeria and eight other African countries Have Resolved To Work Together To Address Environmental, Economic And Security Challenges Confronting Communities In The Two Transboundary Basins.

The two inter-governmental water resources organisations say there is Need To Translate Regional Commitments Into Practical Actions That Promote Peace, Climate Resilience And Shared Prosperity.

The Niger Basin Authority which has Nigeria and eight other countries as member-states and the Lake Chad Basin with Nigeria and three other countries support millions of people whose livelihoods depend on water for agriculture, fishing and other economic activities.

But climate change, pressure on natural resources and insecurity are increasing the need for countries sharing these water systems to work more closely.

At a regional conference in Abuja, stakeholders from the member-states called for stronger cooperation, better water management and strategic investments to build resilience and promote peace and shared prosperity.

The two inter-governmental water resources organisations also stressed the importance of data, technology and inclusive participation, particularly by women and young people, in managing shared resources.

Nigeria and development partners reaffirmed support for coordinated regional action, with stakeholders urging that the conference outcomes translate into practical investments and stronger cooperation across the two basins.

While the Niger Basin Authority has Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Chad as members, the Lake Chad Basin has Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria as its members
