The Nigerian Government is establishing a national digital farmers register to eliminate duplication of data, properly target agricultural support and strengthen Nigeria’s food security.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, made this known in Abuja at a national strategic dialogue on the Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth (AGROW) programme’s digital agriculture strategy.

The initiative is being developed under the Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth, AGROW, programme as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector and enhance food security.
The digital register is expected to provide reliable data on farmers, their locations, farm sizes and areas of production.
The Minister
said the system will help reduce duplication, improve and ensure that targeted interventions reach verified farmers.
For the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, an authentic farmers’ register will improve planning, budgeting and coordination between the Federal and State governments.
With millions of Nigerians depending on agriculture for their livelihoods, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security believes that a credible digital farmers database will be critical to building a more efficient, productive and data-driven agriculture sector.
The initiative is also expected to provide policymakers with accurate and timely information for planning and investment across the agricultural value chain as reliable and traceable data is essential to improving Nigeria’s access to international markets.
