The Kano State Government is stepping up efforts to tackle drug abuse among young people, using an Independence Anniversary lecture to educate youths on the dangers of illicit substances.
Speakers at the event warned that drug abuse not only threatens the future of young people but can also expose them to crime and other social vices.
Students from secondary schools across Kano metropolis, tertiary institutions, serving corps members and other stakeholders converged on the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House for the Independence Anniversary lecture.
Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, who chaired the session, said tackling drug abuse requires the involvement of families, communities, government agencies and other sectors of society.
He commended the state government for making drug abuse a major focus of the lecture.
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, also engaged the young participants, warning them about the consequences of drug abuse and the use of illicit substances.
They described substance abuse as a factor that can contribute to crime and other social problems.
The lecture also examined Nigeria’s democratic journey, with resource persons assessing the country’s progress and the challenges confronting its development since independence.
The Kano State Independence Anniversary Lecture Series was organised by the state government through the Ministry of Education.
Commissioner for Education, Ibrahim Waiya, commended participants and other stakeholders for their contributions to the programme.
