As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, residents of Imo State are asking the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, saying meaningful development will remain difficult without adequate protection of lives and property.
They spoke at the Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri.
For some of the residents, Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary provides another opportunity to assess the country’s progress and the challenges still confronting its citizens.
While acknowledging some of the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, they identified insecurity as an issue requiring greater attention from the Federal Government.
They say improved security is critical to economic activity, national development and the well being of citizens.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, acknowledged the challenges facing the country but said the Independence Anniversary should also provide an opportunity for Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity and development.
On security in Imo State, Governor Uzodimma said his administration will continue to work with traditional rulers, security agencies and communities to strengthen efforts to protect lives and property.
The Governor expressed confidence in Nigeria’s continued unity and called on citizens to contribute to the peace, stability and development of the country.
The celebration ended with the cutting of the Independence Anniversary cake and the symbolic release of pigeons.
