Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has directed state owned tertiary institutions and technical colleges to introduce deep underwater welding courses as part of efforts to equip young people with specialised skills for employment and self reliance.
The Governor announced this as Bayelsa marks 30 years of its creation alongside Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Thirty years after Bayelsa was created, Governor Douye Diri is looking beyond the state’s development record to the skills its young people will need for the future.
At a media interaction marking the anniversary, Diri directed state owned tertiary institutions and technical and vocational colleges to introduce deep underwater welding as a course.
The Governor said greater emphasis must be placed on equipping young people with practical skills that can create employment and promote self reliance.

In a statewide broadcast marking the dual celebrations, Diri also reflected on Bayelsa’s journey since its creation in 1996.
He paid tribute to the founding fathers and others whose advocacy contributed to the creation of the state, while acknowledging the contributions of successive administrations.
Diri pointed to roads, bridges, an international airport and higher institutions as part of the infrastructure developed over the past three decades.
As Bayelsa enters its fourth decade, the Governor says attention will remain on building on existing infrastructure, strengthening institutions and expanding economic opportunities for residents.
