Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, has highlighted Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy as a major milestone in the country’s 66 years of independence.
Sanwo Olu spoke at the Lagos State Independence Anniversary celebration at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
The celebration featured an Independence Day parade by the Nigeria Police, paramilitary agencies and students.
Governor Sanwo Olu said the venue carries historical significance, recalling that Nigeria’s flag was raised close to the arena on October 1, 1960, to mark the country’s independence.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey, the Governor recalled the Civil War, decades of military rule, economic difficulties and political upheavals.
But he identified the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy as a significant achievement, describing it as Nigeria’s longest period of continuous civilian rule.
Government officials, traditional rulers, students and members of the diplomatic community attended the celebration.
