Confrontations between Vehicle Inspection Officers and some motorists in Plateau State have brought their operations into focus.
Following the incidents, the Plateau State Government suspended roadside activities of the officers and commenced consultations with stakeholders.
For weeks, videos of confrontations between Vehicle Inspection Officers and motorists have circulated on social media in Plateau State.
In some instances, motorists are seen challenging VIO personnel, while others show officials being confronted by angry members of the public.
But beyond the disturbing images is the question: what is fuelling the tension between vehicle inspectors and motorists?
For some motorists, their encounters with VIO personnel have raised concerns about the manner of inspection and enforcement on the roads.

But the concerns are not one-sided.
The Plateau State Government says disagreements over enforcement should not degenerate into confrontation or violence.
The Ministry has since engaged transport associations and relevant agencies, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists, to hear concerns and improve coordination.
The government says the consultations will help address concerns surrounding VIO operations and improve interaction with motorists.
The government has also reminded motorists that grievances should be pursued through lawful channels, stressing that assaulting a government official in the course of lawful duty is an offence.
The ongoing consultations are expected to reduce confrontation and improve relations between VIO personnel and motorists.
