Amnesty International has called on the Plateau State Government to reinstate a discontinued rape case involving a four-year-old child.
The organisation’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, made the call while addressing journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The case involves allegations of rape involving a four-year-old child.
According to the child’s legal representative, Stella Samuel, the alleged abuse was uncovered despite reported efforts to conceal it.
The case, which was before the Plateau State High Court, was discontinued after prosecutors from the Office of the Attorney-General of Plateau State invoked Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution.
The decision has prompted Amnesty International to demand the reinstatement of the prosecution.
Amnesty International says the case should be pursued in accordance with the law, with the rights and protection of the child upheld.
The Plateau State Attorney-General’s Office has yet to publicly respond to Amnesty International’s call.
The identities of the child and the accused have been withheld to protect the child, while questions remain over the circumstances surrounding the discontinuation of the case.
