The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to reduce petrol prices, begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage and implement outstanding agreements with health workers.
The ultimatum takes effect on Friday, October 9, 2026, with organised labour warning of further action if its demands are not met.
In a communiqué issued after a joint meeting of its National Executive Council and Central Working Committee in Abuja, the Congress demanded that petrol prices be reduced to the level they were when the current minimum wage was signed into law in 2024.
The communiqué, signed by Congress President Joe Ajaero, also called for fresh negotiations on the seventy-thousand-naira minimum wage, arguing that inflation and the rising cost of living have eroded workers’ purchasing power.
The Congress further demanded full implementation of the February 5, 2026, agreement with the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals, alongside outstanding demands of the Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council.
It also called for tax relief and immediate wage awards to cushion the economic hardship facing workers.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has directed its affiliates to remain on alert for further action if the Federal Government fails to respond within the two-week deadline.
