The Rivers State Government has paid another batch of flood victims in Eneka Community, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, two hundred thousand naira each, as residents continue to battle stagnant floodwaters.
The government says it is also working towards a permanent solution to the recurring flooding, while extending relief assistance to affected communities, including Bonny.
For residents who have lost property to flooding, the financial assistance offers some relief, although the damage and disruption remain.
The Rivers State Flood Management and Control Committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu, is overseeing the distribution of the payments.
Represented by the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. Iyingi Brown, the Deputy Governor says the government is providing immediate assistance while pursuing measures to prevent future flooding.
The government says additional relief efforts will continue alongside plans to address the causes of flooding in affected communities.
But for residents of Eneka, the immediate concern remains the floodwater still trapped around their homes.
Secretary of the Eneka Council of Chiefs, Echebiri Wobodi, describes this year’s flooding as unprecedented, saying some residents are still pumping stagnant water from their properties.
He welcomes the financial assistance but says the community continues to face serious challenges.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Flood Management and Control Committee has handed over food and other essential relief materials for distribution to flood victims in Bonny Local Government Area.
The government says its intervention will continue as affected communities await lasting solutions to the flooding.
