Youths in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have protested alleged illegal raids and intimidation by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The protesters blocked roads around the Government House on Thursday, following reports of sporadic gunfire during an operation near the Federal College of Agriculture on Wednesday.
The protesters say they are not opposed to the commission’s fight against financial crimes but are concerned about the alleged use of firearms and intimidation during some operations.
They claim that the conduct of some operatives has created fear among residents, making it difficult to distinguish security personnel from armed robbers.
The protest disrupted traffic around the Government House, restricting the movement of vehicles and motorcycles.
Addressing the protesters, the Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Special Duties, Femi Fadairo, acknowledged their right to peaceful protest but urged them not to obstruct other road users.
The protesters called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to ensure its operatives properly identify themselves during raids and avoid actions that could endanger residents or cause unnecessary panic.
