Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has warned contractors handling major federal road projects against collecting mobilisation funds without carrying out construction work.
Umahi gave the warning in Abuja while reviewing progress on four major highway projects, insisting that contractors must account for public funds and deliver work according to their contractual obligations.
The projects under review include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Calabar-Ebonyi-Abuja Highway and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Road.
Umahi says contractors must ensure that mobilisation payments translate into measurable construction work rather than remain unaccounted for.
He says the ministry is monitoring project execution to ensure contractors meet their obligations and government spending produces the expected results.
With construction ongoing along the major corridors, attention remains on the pace of work, completion timelines and when motorists and communities will begin to benefit from the projects.
