The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has warned residents against jungle justice, stressing that no allegation of crime justifies the beating or killing of a suspect.
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare gave the warning during a stakeholders’ engagement in Uyo, where he also urged residents to report police misconduct for investigation and appropriate disciplinary action.
The stakeholders’ engagement was part of activities marking the 2026 Police Customer Service Week, with discussions focusing on professionalism, accountability and improved service delivery.
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare urged residents to report officers involved in misconduct through appropriate channels.
He also directed police personnel to respond promptly to complaints and treat members of the public with respect.
The Commissioner warned against jungle justice, stressing that suspected criminals must be handed over to the police rather than subjected to mob attacks.
He maintained that allegations of criminal conduct do not justify taking the law into one’s hands.
Stakeholders at the engagement linked the growing participation of young people in skills acquisition programmes to the relatively peaceful security environment in the state.
They also acknowledged cooperation between the police and residents, calling for sustained engagement to improve security and public confidence.
The engagement ended with renewed calls for accountability among police officers and greater public cooperation in preventing crime.
