The Federal Road Safety Corps has warned motorists against driving with poor eyesight or when physically unfit, saying such conditions increase the risk of road crashes.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed gave the warning during a free medical outreach in Abuja, where drivers were offered vision screening and other preventive healthcare services.
As traffic increases during the ember months, the Federal Road Safety Corps is drawing attention to the health conditions that could put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.
The medical outreach provides an opportunity for motorists to undergo health checks and identify conditions that could affect their ability to drive safely.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed says good vision is essential for identifying road signs, pedestrians, vehicles and obstacles, particularly when road conditions change unexpectedly.
The Corps Marshal also urged motorists to get adequate rest and avoid driving when tired or physically unfit.
He stressed that preventing road crashes requires attention to drivers’ health, alongside vehicle maintenance and road conditions.
The free medical outreach, organised in collaboration with BATMedics, includes vision screening and access to appropriate surgical interventions for those who require them.
The exercise is aimed at detecting visual impairments that could compromise driving safety and reducing preventable crashes on Nigerian roads.
