The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has described the Federal Government’s announcement of a 30-day petrol discount at NNPC retail stations as “tokenism and deceit.”
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party said the initiative amounts to an attempt to reintroduce petrol subsidy through the backdoor after the government’s removal of fuel subsidy.
The NDC questioned the practicality of the scheme, asking whether the available NNPC outlets could adequately serve millions of Nigerians and warning of possible congestion and safety risks at filling stations.
The party also blamed the Tinubu administration for the economic hardship Nigerians have experienced since the subsidy removal, alleging job losses, business closures and pressure on the healthcare system.
The NDC called on Nigerians to support Peter Obi and other NDC candidates in the January 15, 2027 elections.
The Federal Government described the 30-day measure as a petrol discount rather than a subsidy, with priority reportedly given to public transport operators.
