Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (N-SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has flagged off the 2024 and 2025 Greening Schools and Climate Change Education Intervention Programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and creating safer and more conducive learning environments for pupils across the state.

The flag-off ceremony, which took place at the 123 Primary School in Minna, the Niger State capital, featured the planting of trees within the school premises as part of efforts to increase green spaces, improve the school environment and raise awareness among teachers and pupils on the importance of protecting the environment.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Hadiza Mohammed announced plans by the state government to revive school farming and environmental greening initiatives across public schools in the state.

She said the distribution of economic tree seedlings to schools is part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, practical agriculture, and future livelihood opportunities for pupils.

The Commissioner revealed that the initiative is aimed at reintroducing the culture of school farms, which had gradually disappeared from many schools over the years, while also encouraging pupils to take ownership of agricultural activities and environmental protection.

The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC, Aisha Garba who was represented by the Niger State UBEC Coordinator, George Uboh, said Niger State is the first state in the country to begin planting trees in public primary schools; hence it should be sustained, assuring the board of the UBEC of full support for the implementation of the Programme.
