The Federal Government has reopened the first Niger bridge linking Anambra and Delta states, following weeks of extensive rehabilitation works.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Minister of works, Dave Umahi, described the intervention as part of the President Tinubu administration’s commitment to maintaining critical national infrastructure and improving transportation across the country.

The Federal Government had on September 7, 2026, closed the first Niger bridge, linking Onitsha, Anambra state to Asaba, Delta state, to allow repairs after vandalized structural components were discovered.

After thirty eight days of closure for emergency rehabilitation works, Nigeria’s minister of works, Dave Umahi, alongside federal and state representatives, reopened the bridge on Thursday.

Umahi noted that, the intervention also included the installation of median barriers and the creation of three designated turnaround points to facilitate traffic management.

Speaking on the deteriorating condition of the Benin -Asaba expressway, Umahi announced that president Bola Tinubu had directed a comprehensive redesign of both highways ahead of its reconstruction.

Delta state Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori who was represented by the commissioner for works, Rural roads, Charles Aniagwu, commended president Tinubu for the prompt response.

Oborevwori noted that the rehabilitation went beyond improving the physical appearance of the bridge, stressing that the intervention enhances the safety of commuters.
