About 15 political parties and their candidates have participated in the signing of a peace accord organised by the Police in Zamfara State, North-West Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.

Two major governorship candidates, including Senator Kabiru Marafa of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC and Bilyaminu Shinkafi of the African Democratic Congress, ADC were physically absent from the event, although the ADC candidate was represented.

The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Bello, warned the candidates against violating electoral guidelines, stressing that the police and other security agencies would not spare anyone found engaging in electoral offences.

It was a gathering of political parties, governorship candidates, their representatives, and supporters who converged to sign a peace accord organised by the Zamfara State Police Command as part of efforts to promote peaceful conduct ahead of the 2027 general election.

Among those present were Governor Dauda Lawal, who is the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate, representatives of the ADC governorship candidate, Bilyaminu Shinkafi, and the Labour Party candidate, alongside other political stakeholders.

The candidates and their representatives signed the peace accord, pledging to conduct their political activities peacefully and adhere to the provisions of the agreement and established electoral guidelines.

Some of the candidates, who spoke to journalists after the exercise, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, describing peaceful political engagement as essential to a credible electoral process.

As preparations gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the peace accord is expected to encourage political parties and their candidates to embrace tolerance, respect the rule of law, and avoid actions capable of triggering violence.

The coming months will test the commitment of political stakeholders to ensuring a peaceful electoral process in Zamfara State.
