The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has submitted the draft National Policing Bill 2026 and 29 consequential amendment bills to the Federal Ministry of Justice for legislative drafting review and validation.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, says the validated bills are expected to be returned by October 30, ahead of their final consideration and presentation to President Bola Tinubu.

The proposed National Policing Bill 2026 has moved to the legislative drafting review stage, following the completion of the drafting process by the Presidential Working Group.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the draft bill and 29 consequential amendment bills were submitted to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on October 19.

The review by the Ministry of Justice is expected to ensure that the bills comply with legislative drafting standards and do not conflict with existing laws.

The Ministry is expected to return the validated bills to the Working Group on or before October 30, after which they will undergo final consideration before presentation to the President.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a constitutional and legal framework for a dual policing structure comprising the Federal Police Service and State Police Services.

Gbajabiamila said the process was progressing alongside consideration of the 1999 Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill 2026 by State Houses of Assembly.

He explained that the constitutional amendment process must be completed before the National Policing Bill can be transmitted to the National Assembly.

The Working Group says it remains committed to delivering a comprehensive legislative proposal for the President’s consideration and subsequent transmission to the legislature.
