The International Basketball Federation, FIBA has congratulated Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha on his election as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF and confirmed that Sam Ahmedu faces no regulatory impediment to serving on the federation’s board.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, and addressed to Mustapha, FIBA acknowledged the outcome of the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, commending the federation for completing the electoral process in line with its constitution and applicable regulations.
The international governing body also congratulated members elected to serve on the NBBF board for the 2026–2030 term and expressed appreciation to the outgoing administration led by Ahmadu Musa Kida.
On Ahmedu’s eligibility, FIBA confirmed that he is the most senior Nigerian serving on its boards, having been a member of FIBA bodies since 1997. It stated that there were no regulatory impediments to his service on the NBBF board under its regulatory framework. The clarification followed a request from the NBBF seeking guidance from the international body.
Mustapha emerged victorious in the October 15 election, polling 40 votes against eight secured by former national team captain Olumide Oyedeji. While former candidate, Ejike Ugboaja received no votes, Igoche Mark withdrew from the contest.
The election was preceded by tensions over the electoral process, including a petition alleging irregularities and a court challenge that failed to stop the congress.
FIBA also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing board under Kida, who did not seek a third term after eight years as NBBF president. Kida is a long-standing member of the FIBA Finance Commission.
FIBA’s letter provides support for the new administration as it begins its four-year tenure, while clarifying Ahmedu’s eligibility to serve on the federation’s board.
