Medical experts have urged the Federal Government to provide better surgical facilities and expand training in laparoscopic surgery to improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Speaking at a forum in Lagos, they said greater access to these procedures could help patients recover faster and reduce the need to seek treatment abroad.
Laparoscopic surgery allows surgeons to perform operations through small incisions, using a camera and specialised instruments.
For suitable patients, the approach can shorten recovery time and reduce hospital stays compared with conventional open surgery.
Experts at this forum in Lagos say making these procedures more widely available could help more Nigerians receive treatment locally.
They want investment in equipment, facilities and the training and retraining of healthcare professionals.
According to experts at the forum, Nigeria has about 150 registered professionals in the specialty, highlighting the need to expand training and access to care.
The discussions also examined developments in robotic surgery and their potential to improve patient care.
Participants said sustained investment in specialist skills and equipment would help strengthen surgical services in Nigeria.
