Accountants have been challenged to go beyond keeping financial records and help ensure that public spending improves the lives of Nigerians.
Speakers at a gathering of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in the Federal Capital Territory said integrity and accountability must guide the management of public resources.
House of Representatives member and lead paper presenter, Gboyega Isiaka, said accountants must move from simply counting public money to making public money count for citizens.
He urged them to use their expertise to promote transparency, strengthen accountability and improve the results of government spending.
Other speakers, including African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and Senator Isa Misau, said accountants’ responsibilities extended beyond balancing the books.
They stressed the need for professional integrity and financial management that supports better living conditions for Nigerians.
The speakers said accountants, as custodians of financial information and public trust, must help ensure that government resources are properly accounted for and deliver measurable benefits to citizens.
