Zamfara State Government has intensified Ebola surveillance measures to prevent the possible spread of the virus into the state following reports of a confirmed case in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Maradun, led a surveillance team to the Gusau International Airport to screen passengers arriving from Abuja and other destinations as part of efforts to strengthen preparedness and prevent a possible outbreak.
The surveillance team arrived at the Gusau International Airport at about 12 noon, following directives from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC to strengthen preparedness and response measures in the wake of the reported Ebola case.
As the aircraft touched down at the Gusau International Airport, health officials commenced screening of arriving passengers as part of efforts to identify possible health risks and prevent the introduction of the virus into the state.
However, a passenger of interest was identified with an elevated body temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius. The passenger was reportedly travelling from Saudi Arabia through Egypt and Dubai, prompting further attention from the surveillance team.
The team, led by the Director of Public Health in the Zamfara State Ministry of Health, Dr. Yusuf Abubakar, later held a meeting with border surveillance authorities, health workers and road transport operators to strengthen surveillance and improve coordination across the state.
The meeting is expected to assess the state’s level of preparedness, identify gaps in the surveillance system, coordinate corrective actions and submit a report outlining findings and recommendations for improved response measures.
