A proposal has been made for the establishment of Raymond Dokpesi Media Resource Centre to promote the legacy of the late founder of DAAR Communications PLC, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and immortalise him.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, made the proposal and offered to lead the campaign for its establishment as the guest lecturer of the Third Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
Speaking on the theme, “Media, Democratic Consolidation and Development,” Uzodimma stressed that democracy goes beyond conducting elections every four years.
He explained that true democratic consolidation requires strong institutions, accountability and a system in which democratic values become firmly established and sustained.
The lecture focused on the role of the media in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability and driving national development.
He says credible information and a responsible media are indispensable to democratic consolidation and national progress.
Other speakers also highlighted the media’s responsibility in shaping public decisions, explaining that the quality of information available to citizens influences their choices and, ultimately, the strength of democratic institutions.
They maintained that meaningful economic growth, infrastructure development and social justice depend on a stable democracy supported by a free and responsible media.
Chairman of DAAR Communications, Raymond Dokpesi Jr., and President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, are central to the initiative, established to preserve the legacy of the late Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, whose pioneering contributions helped expand independent broadcasting in Nigeria.
The lecture provides a platform to reflect on his enduring impact on journalism, public accountability and national development.
