Nigeria has evacuated the country’s first imported Ebola virus disease patient to Switzerland for further medical care, following significant improvement in her clinical condition.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, said that the patient remains potentially infectious despite showing signs of recovery, necessitating strict public health protocols.
Professor Pate disclosed this in a statement via his handle on X, confirming that the patient departed Abuja for Switzerland earlier Monday with the approval of the Federal Government.
According to the Minister, the patient is clinically stable, conscious, communicating, and her laboratory test results are approaching baseline levels.
However, he cautioned that clinical improvement does not necessarily mean the patient is no longer infectious, stressing that strict safety measures remain in place.
The patient was evacuated alongside her spouse, who has reportedly remained asymptomatic.
The Minister commended the clinical teams for providing quality care and praised public health personnel for ensuring that the evacuation complied with established safety protocols.
He added that further updates would be provided following the successful arrival of the patient and her spouse at their destination.
