Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has charged permanent secretaries to uphold accountability, transparency and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The Governor stressed the need for improved performance and effective service delivery across the state.
The Governor gave the charge on Monday while declaring open a two-day Strategic Leadership and Orientation Retreat for Permanent Secretaries in Benin City.
He commended the officials for their role in strengthening governance.
Okpebholo urged them to uphold integrity, resist corruption, eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy and embrace innovation to ensure government policies deliver measurable benefits to residents.
The Governor also cautioned the permanent secretaries against acting on instructions merely because they were attributed to him. He insisted that such directives must be verified and confirmed to be authentic, lawful and consistent with financial regulations and established procedures.
Governor Okpebholo said his administration had introduced several reforms in less than two years to reposition the civil service for effective governance.
These include prompt payment of salaries, continuation of the 13th-month salary and an increase in the minimum wage from N70,000 to N75,000.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, commended the Governor for prioritising workers’ welfare and strengthening the civil service, describing the gesture as support for improved administrative efficiency.
The permanent secretaries were urged to maximise the retreat by reviewing their responsibilities and developing practical strategies to strengthen accountability, improve institutional performance and enhance service delivery across Edo State.
