The Bayelsa State Government says the implementation of newly approved special allowances for public servants and workers in tertiary institutions will increase its monthly salary expenditure by approximately three billion naira from October 2026.
The government explained that more than 900 million naira will go to workers in tertiary institutions, while the peculiar allowances approved for other categories of public servants will add about two billion naira to the monthly salary bill, raising the state’s total wage bill from 13 billion to 16 billion naira.
The disclosure comes during the state’s transparency briefing on its income and expenditure for August and September 2026.
Rendering a breakdown of incomes and expenditures for August and September, the Technical Adviser to Governor Douye Diri on Treasury and Accounts, Timipre Seipolu, addresses the recent approval and implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA, for academic staff of state-owned universities, and the peculiar allowance to other public servants with payments already commencing this October.

Also, following a Supreme Court decision on the collection of Personal Income Tax from oil companies operating in the state, Seipolu expresses optimism that the revenue will go a long way in strengthening the state’s revenue base.
The two developments are significant to the state’s revenue administration and its efforts to improve workers’ welfare, particularly in the education sector.
