Police is seeking additional personnel, patrol vehicles and modern operational equipment ahead of the 2026 Calabar Carnival and the 2027 general election.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG in charge of Zone Six, Rashid Afegbua, says effective security during the two major events will depend on stronger collaboration among security agencies and adequate operational preparedness.
For a state preparing to host thousands of visitors during its annual carnival while also approaching another electoral cycle, security preparedness is a major responsibility for the police and other security agencies.
And this is the concern of the AIG Afegbua, who called for stronger inter-agency cooperation and joint security exercises ahead of the events. The AIG spoke during a familiarisation visit to the state police command in Calabar.

Afegbua also emphasised professionalism and accountability, warning officers against extortion, harassment, intimidation and other misconduct capable of eroding public confidence in the police.
Earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey, outlined the command’s efforts to strengthen security through community engagement, intelligence-led policing, discreet investigations and collaboration with other security agencies.
With the carnival and 2027 elections presenting different but equally demanding security responsibilities, the focus now is on translating these directives into coordinated operations.
