Gunmen have attacked troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE at Sopp Checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing a soldier and carting away two weapons.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday night, prompted an aggressive pursuit of the perpetrators by security forces.
The incident occurred at about eight o’clock on Saturday night at Sopp Checkpoint, Ungwan Boka, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources say the troops, who were on duty at the checkpoint, came under attack when gunmen opened fire from different directions, triggering an exchange of gunfire before the assailants fled into nearby bushes.
The attack reportedly left one soldier dead, while the gunmen escaped with two weapons.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for Operation ENDURING PEACE, Captain Chinonso Oteh, described the assault as deliberate and unprovoked, saying the troops were performing their lawful duties when they came under attack.
He said normalcy had since been restored in the area, while troops had intensified efforts to track down the attackers, apprehend those responsible and recover the stolen weapons.

The task force has urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in their ongoing operations.
